The conference fringe sessions will talk about something we don’t normally discuss – failure and learning from our mistakes.
Please note: this is a closed door session. In order to make this a safe learning environment in which we can share and learn from one another, we ask that you do not Tweet or record this session in any way.

Learning from mistakes made as part of being an early adopter
(Weds PM and Thurs PM)

Shelley Bernstein, Chief of Technology - Brooklyn Museum

Shelley will share examples of digital projects she’s worked on which haven’t quite gone to plan! She will provide delegates with an insight into what she learnt from these and how this has led to changes in their practice at Brooklyn Museum enabling other projects to become really successful. This is an interactive session and delegates will be asked to join Shelley in discussing mistakes that we’re making across the sector (in digital and in other areas of our work) that we perhaps don’t yet have an answer to. As an early adopter of new technologies and new approaches to working with audiences in an open and participatory way, Shelley is in an ideal position to kick start our discussions on common themes or mistakes that we can learn from. What works and what doesn’t? What should we do more of? And what we can forget about?

What will I gain?

  • A chance to hear an open, honest account of the pros and cons of being an early adopter
  • The rare opportunity to discuss things that can go wrong with peers from across the sector
  • Advice and insights from our speakers and other delegates on lessons learnt from managing projects and marketing initiatives within the arts

Learning from mistakes during a period of organisational change
(Weds AM and Thurs AM)

Jane Donald, Director of Marketing - Royal Scottish National Orchestra and
Peter Muir, New Media Manager - Glasgow's Concert Halls

We’ve all had experience of things going wrong. When something unexpected happens – how do you get the department back on track? Jane and Peter will share stories from their experiences of working together at Glasgow’s Concert Halls. Several years ago everything was in a state of change at the halls – venues were being added to the organisation’s portfolio, new technology needed to be managed, audience expectations were shifting etc. They will discuss what worked for them during this time of rapid change and what went wrong and will share recommendations for others attempting to manage change within their organisations.

What will I gain?

  • A chance to hear an open and honest account of the positive side of failure.
  • The rare opportunity to discuss things that can go wrong with peers from across the sector
  • Advice and insights from our speakers and other delegates on lessons learnt from managing during a time of change
